The Fetlock module uses clinical case presentations and live demonstrations to explore some of the most common conditions of the Fetlock, Tendon, PSL, & Carpus that practitioners deal with in everyday practice. The module provides 20 hours of instruction and includes three hours of practice on live horses under the supervision of certified instructors.

 

Conditions reviewed include fetlock diseases; digital sheath tenosynovitis; digital flexor tendinopathies; suspensory apparatus conditions; and carpal joint and canal conditions. Special emphasis is placed on the rational corrective shoeing of the different conditions using kinesitherapic shoes.

Jean-Marie Denoix, DVM, Phd, Assoc. LA-ECVDI, DACVSMR, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP), & ISELP President

Dr. Denoix of the CIRALE (Center of Imaging and Research on Equine Locomotor Affections) in Normandy, France is considered the world’s foremost equine musculoskeletal system anatomist as well as a leading equine diagnostic ultrasonographer. Dr. Denoix is a founder and current president of ISELP and was also the 2006 recipient of the Schering Plough Equine Research Award from the World Equine Veterinary Association for outstanding applied research work in Equine Diagnostic Imaging. Jean-Marie has been the invited speaker at many international meetings in more than 30 countries around the world on topics related to clinical examination and imaging of equine locomotor problems.

 

 

Peter Kazakevicius, DVM, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)

A native of Nebraska, Dr. Pete’s early exposure to horses greatly influenced his educational and professional paths. After playing college  baseball, he attended the University of Utah and completed his bachelor’s degree in Biology. While there, he was afforded the unique opportunity to observe and assist the veterinary team at the artificial organs division artificial heart program.

He returned to the Midwest and attended Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. As a junior student, he was accepted into the large animal summer internship program and subsequently received his doctorate in veterinary medicine, graduating first in his class. Dr. Kazakevicius then moved to Lexington, Kentucky where he spent the next 19 years, first as a solo practitioner and then as a partner in the Lexington Equine Group. In 2005, he relocated to Ocala, Florida where he served as resident veterinarian for the Adena Springs South thoroughbred division and later as staff veterinarian at the Sanctuary Equine Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Center, one of the first full service rehabilitation centers dedicated to the equine athlete. He continues to reside in Ocala and services a multi-discipline performance horse clientele.

Dr. Kazakevicius received his ISELP certification in 2018 and believes strongly in continuing his development as a veterinarian through ISELP. He has also received certification in veterinary acupuncture (IVAS), equine veterinary medical manipulation and is an FEI treating veterinarian.

Dr. Pete’s professional interests include all aspects in the treatment and care of the performance horse as a high caliber athlete, from early training and development and throughout their competitive career. His focus is on being proactive in the early recognition and diagnosis of performance limiting issues and developing specific treatment protocols tailored for each individual horse.

 

Mitch Lowrey, DVM, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)
After serving 8 years as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, Dr. Lowrey followed his passion for horses to Oklahoma State University, where he earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine.  From there, he completed an internship at Peterson & Smith in Ocala, Florida.  Upon completion of his internship, Dr. Lowrey spent several years at the race tracks in Lexington, Kentucky where he gained valuable insight into lameness issues and equine locomotion. Dr. Lowrey then relocated to coastal South Carolina where he is an owner and managing partner of Equine Sports Medicine & Chiropractic Care, LLC, a sports medicine practice and rehabilitation facility.  Dr. Lowrey’s practice is 100% sports medicine and serves clients in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.  Dr. Lowrey also receives patients from across the country at his facility located in Estill, South Carolina. Dr. Lowrey is a Certified Member of the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology, Certified in Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy, and Certified in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture. When Dr. Lowrey isn’t practicing medicine, you can find him training for his next half-marathon, riding his favorite reining mare Little Tabby Cat, or tending to farm projects with his wife Kelly, an equine attorney practicing in Arizona and South Carolina.
 
 Richard Mitchell, DVM, MRCVS, DACVSMR, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)

Rick Mitchell grew up on his family’s working horse farm in North Carolina. He participated in fox-hunting, and hunter/jumper competitions from childhood to an adult. He graduated from the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1974. He served on active duty in the USAF Veterinary Corps for two years following graduation. He then began private practice in Connecticut with his mentor, Dr. Howard Raven in 1976. He currently is a part owner of Fairfield Equine Associates in Newtown, CT and practices equine medicine and surgery with an emphasis on lameness and imaging. He has been internationally certified in veterinary acupuncture and equine locomotor pathology as well as completing requirements for Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) in 2015. Rick has been involved in national and international equine competitions as both a rider and veterinarian. As a rider, he has won two national championships and one world championship in various disciplines. He has authored multiple nationally and internationally published articles and textbook chapters on equine health care. He has been an invited speaker on sport horse medicine in the U.S., Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom, South America, Africa, India, and Mexico. Rick has served on multiple Boards of Directors including the United States Equestrian Federation, Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Rick is a current Trustee for the American Horse Council and chairman of the Health and Regulatory Committee. He was also a founding member of the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology, serving on the society’s board of directors. 2016 marked his sixth visit to the Olympic Games as an attending veterinarian for the US Equestrian Team. 2015 marked his fifth Pan American games as well. He is now serving as Chair of the The Foundation For The Horse Advisory Council.

 

Jessica Morgan, DVM, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)

Jessica grew up in central Minnesota in an active horse family. She is a Kansas State University CVM graduate and is a private Equine practitioner focused on equine lameness diagnostics and therapeutics. She and her husband operate Morgan Equine Veterinary & Farrier Hospital in the finger lakes region of up state New York and spend the winter months in Ocala Florida with their horses.
Her professional veterinary educational efforts have led to training in horseshoeing, an equine medicine and surgery internship, veterinary acupuncture, veterinary chiropractic and equine dentistry courses. In 2010 she became an ISELP certified member in Equine Locomotor Pathology. As a life-long multidisciplinary equestrian competitor; she currently enjoys the mental challenge of USDF shows and the athletic complexity of USEA horse trials. She has a talented and opinionated Westphalan mare who is moving through the levels nicely in both.

 

Michael D. Sorum, DVM, MVetSc, DABVP (Equine),Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)

 

 

Dr. Sorum earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science at Cal Poly University. He then earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Kansas State University. He has been in practice for over 30 years, treating equine lameness and performance issues on and off the racetrack. He is also Board Certified in Equine Practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. Dr. Sorum has also earned a Master of Veterinary Science degree in Conservation Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. He is certified by the ISELP (International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology). He is past President of the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association. In his spare time, he spends time with his five dogs-Blue, Smiley, Shorty, Big Dog and Buddy.
