Kent Allen, DVM, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP) Vice President & Executive Director of ISELP

Dr. Kent Allen received his DVM from the University of Missouri in 1979 and has been practicing equine medicine ever since. There are three other veterinarians in his family, his father, older sister and wife. Dr. Allen opened Virginia Equine Imaging (VEI) in 1996 after selling the practice he formerly owned in Arizona (Arizona Equine Medical and Surgical Center). Virginia Equine Imaging became the first privately owned and operated equine diagnostic imaging specialty clinic in the world. He had a vision to establish a practice that provides advanced diagnostic and sports medicine to the equine athlete in a way that had never been done before. During his transition from Arizona to Virginia, Dr. Allen served as the Veterinary Services Manager at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, acquiring the title of Arizona Equine Practitioner of the year in 1996.


Since moving to Virginia and establishing VEI, Dr. Allen has found time to serve as Chairman of the USEF Veterinary Committee, the USEF Drug and Medication Committee, the Medication Sub Committee and List Committee for the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI). He has served as Vice Chairman of the FEI Veterinary Committee twice. He has served on the Board of the USEF and the USEA and is currently Vice President, Executive Director and Board member for ISELP.
He served as the FEI Foreign Veterinary Delegate for the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, the 2000 Olympic Games at Sydney, and the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Dr. Allen was also the 2010 Lexington KY World Equestrian Games Veterinary Services Manager.


Dr. Allen is a currently a Certified Member of the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP). Dr. Allen continues to see patients and share his knowledge with veterinarians, associates and interns and clients on a day to day basis,striving to further and share his knowledge with the equine industry both in his local community and around the world.

 

Jean-Marie Denoix, DVM, Phd, Assoc. LA-ECVDI, DACVSMR, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP), & ISELP President

Dr. Denoix of the CIRALE (Center of Imaging and Research on Equine Locomotor Affections) in Normandy, France is considered the world’s foremost equine musculoskeletal system anatomist as well as a leading equine diagnostic ultrasonographer. Dr. Denoix is a founder and current president of ISELP and was also the 2006 recipient of the Schering Plough Equine Research Award from the World Equine Veterinary Association for outstanding applied research work in Equine Diagnostic Imaging. Jean-Marie has been the invited speaker at many international meetings in more than 30 countries around the world on topics related to clinical examination and imaging of equine locomotor problems.

 

 

Sarah Gold, DVM

Born in Nuremburg, Germany, Dr. Sarah Gold grew up in Suffern, NY.  Dr. Gold graduated cum laude from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University in 2000 with a degree in Animal Science. Dr. Gold was then accepted directly into veterinary school at Cornell University and graduated there in 2004. She completed a one-year internship at the Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center in the Santa Ynez Valley in California. Upon completion of her internship in 2005, she then joined B.W. Furlong & Associates with a special interest in regenerative medicine (stem cell, PRP), lameness, and diagnostic imaging. During her time at the practice, she has served as assistant team veterinarian to the United States Eventing Team in numerous national and international competitions, including the 2008 Olympics and 2010 World Equestrian Games. Given her experience and strong interest in imaging, she manages both Equine MRI of New Jersey and Advanced Equine Imaging of Wellington. She is based in Wellington for most of the winter season. Dr. Gold is the medical director of Furlong’s Soundness Center, and is currently enrolled in the Alternative Residency Training program to obtain board certification in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.

 

Melissa King, DVM, PhD, DACVSMR

Dr. Melissa King is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is currently an Assistant Professor in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. 

Dr. King earned her veterinary degree from Colorado State University in 1997; following graduation she completed a one-year internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Following her internship Dr. King returned to northern Colorado as an equine private practitioner focusing on orthopaedics and sports medicine. After practicing for 10 years Dr. King returned to Colorado State University to pursue a PhD in equine orthopaedics and rehabilitation at the Equine Orthopaedic Research Center. The focus of her research was to investigate the physiologic, biomechanical, and histologic effects of aquatic therapy on diminishing the progression of osteoarthritis within the equine middle carpal joint.  Dr. King’s current research interests involve the objective assessment of underwater treadmill exercise for the management of equine musculoskeletal injuries, as well as the biomechanical assessment of compensatory gait adaptations.

 
Natanya Nieman, DVM
 
Natanya Nieman grew up in Lexington. She rode dressage and event horses, worked at thoroughbred sales, and worked on Thoroughbred and Standardbred farms throughout college. In 1994, she graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture Biotechnology. After college, she attended veterinary school at The Ohio State University and graduated in 1998. By 1999, Natanya had completed an internship at Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala, Florida. She then worked at Woodford Veterinary Clinic from 1999-2002. Natanya has been with WinStar Farms for 10 years now. She is married to Mike McMahon from Saratoga Springs, NY. WinStar-bred Kentucky Derby Champion Funny Cide was born on his father's McMahon Thoroughbred Farm in New York.
 
 
 
 
 Duncan Peters, DVM, MS, DACVSMR, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)

Dr. Duncan Peters received his DVM in 1982 from the University of California-Davis and has been practicing sport horse medicine for over 30 years. He became a certified member of ISELP in 2008 and sits on the Board of Directors. He is an active AAEP member and past board of director. He earned diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) in 2013. He was an associate professor in clinical equine lameness and sports medicine at Michigan State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, from 2012 to 2015. Dr. Peters is currently co-owner of East-West Equine Sports Medicine, LLC, Lexington, Kentucky, a private practice focused on diagnosis and treatment of equine lameness, poor performance and overall management of the sport horse for optimum performance. He has consulted and authored many articles in lay publications and is a contributing author for Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery, Hinchcliff et al. and Current Therapy in Equine Medicine, Robinson and Sprayberry. Dr. Peters is an active member in a variety of sport horse associations and a member of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Veterinary and Drugs and Medication Committees. He is a USEF evaluation veterinarian for the eventing, dressage and endurance discipline international teams and a multi-disciplined Federation Equestrian Internationale (FEI) veterinarian. He has been one of the USA team veterinarians for the para-equestrian and vaulting disciplines since 2014. He was a member of the Veterinary Commission during the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and the 2015 Pan American Games. Dr Peters is a member of the North American Veterinary Regenerative Medicine Association (NAVRMA), actively competes in hunter/jumper shows and fox hunts regularly.
