This Event is Open to All Veterinarians.

The Distal Hind limb module uses clinical case presentations and live demonstrations to explore the most common conditions of the Metatarsus, Fetlock, Pastern and hind Foot that practitioners deal with in everyday practice. The module provides 20 hours of instruction and includes three hours of practice on live horses under the supervision of certified instructors.

Conditions reviewed include metatarsal diseases with special emphasis on the proximal suspensory desmopathies and enthesopathies; hind fetlock diseases including digital sheath tenosynovitis; Pastern injuries including sesamoidean desmopathies and digital flexor tendinopathies; and hind Foot conditions (distal sesamoid bone and third phalanx injuries) . Special emphasis is placed on the rational corrective shoeing of the different conditions using kinesitherapic shoes.

Jean-Marie Denoix, DVM, Phd, Assoc. LA-ECVDI, DACVSMR, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP), & ISELP President

Dr. Denoix of the CIRALE (Center of Imaging and Research on Equine Locomotor Affections) in Normandy, France is considered the world’s foremost equine musculoskeletal system anatomist as well as a leading equine diagnostic ultrasonographer. Dr. Denoix is a founder and current president of ISELP and was also the 2006 recipient of the Schering Plough Equine Research Award from the World Equine Veterinary Association for outstanding applied research work in Equine Diagnostic Imaging. Jean-Marie has been the invited speaker at many international meetings in more than 30 countries around the world on topics related to clinical examination and imaging of equine locomotor problems.

Kent Allen, DVM, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP) Vice President & Executive Director of ISELP

An avid competitor with American Quarter Horses throughout his youth, Dr. Kent Allen received his DVM degree from the University of Missouri in 1979. His practice currently focuses on top level sports medicine, lameness and diagnostic imaging at Virginia Equine Imaging. He lectures to veterinarians and horse people throughout the nation and the world on lameness, imaging and sports medicine topics.

Billy Hodge, DVM, MRCVS, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)

Dr. William Hodge graduated from Liverpool Veterinary School in England in May 2007. Upon graduation, he quickly turned his focus to the equine athlete. In the UK, he worked on pleasure horses and sport horses of all backgrounds under the supervision of several diplomats and experienced clinicians before joining a referral equine clinic. There he worked with eventers, show jumpers and pleasure horses evaluating lamenesses using digital imaging (bone scan, ultrasound, radiography and MRI) with a focus on therapy and regeneration of injuries. When he returned to North America, he spent several years working predominantly with race horses and sport horses in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Dr. Hodge is the author of a novel technique of alcohol-fusion in the lower hock joint as a therapy for chronic lameness in horses. His interest in poor performance and equine medicine has also been a large focus of his career carrying out emergency medicine/care, colic management, anaesthesia, gastroscopy, abdominal and thoracic ultrasound and routine dentistry. He also spent several years at a large stud farm in the UK providing reproductive services.

However, his focus has remained largely on lameness, diagnostics and return of the equine athlete to previous performance. He continues to search for novel techniques and rehabilitation regimes for horses with soft tissue injuries of the distal and proximal limb. Billy completed his ISELP certification in 2017 and is now the second veterinarian in Canada with ISELP certification.

Michael Hoge, DVM, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)

Michael Hoge is the owner of Murrieta Equine located in Southern Calif. Murrieta Equine is a non-ambulatory equine practice with a focus on lameness. The objective of the practice is to offer a comprehensive diagnosis and the incorporation of biomechanical principals into the rehabilitation as well as regenerative medicine as a treatment option.

  Jessica Morgan, DVM, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)

Jessica grew up in central Minnesota in an active horse family. She is a Kansas State University CVM graduate and is a private Equine practitioner focused on equine lameness diagnostics and therapeutics. She and her husband operate Morgan Equine Veterinary & Farrier Hospital in the finger lakes region of up state New York and spend the winter months in Ocala Florida with their horses.
Her professional veterinary educational efforts have led to training in horseshoeing, an equine medicine and surgery internship, veterinary acupuncture, veterinary chiropractic and equine dentistry courses. In 2010 she became an ISELP certified member in Equine Locomotor Pathology. As a life-long multidisciplinary equestrian competitor; she currently enjoys the mental challenge of USDF shows and the athletic complexity of USEA horse trials. She has a talented and opinionated Westphalan mare who is moving through the levels nicely in both organizations.

Russ Peterson,DVM, MS, DACVSMR, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)

A native of Santa Barbara, CA, Dr. Peterson earned his Bachelor of Science, Biology from Claremont Men’s College; Master of Science, Animal Nutrition, from University of California at Davis, and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California at Davis. In 1979, Dr. Peterson co-founded Peninsula Equine, a two-man Thoroughbred/Quarter Racing and Sport Horse practice, which quickly grew to be solely a Sport Horse practice within two short years. During these early years, Dr. Peterson played a key role in establishing veterinary supervision and standards for the AERC endurance competitions from 1979-1990. He quickly became sought after by many of the nation’s most prestigious associations. In 1984 he was active as a founder and board member of the Association of Equine Sports Medicine, in 1986 member of the UC Davis External Advisory Board, and in 1993 began service on the California Veterinary Licensing Board Exam Committee among others.

Kurt Selberg, DVM, MS, DACVR, Certified in Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP)

Kurt Selberg is a North Idaho native; where his family owned a quarter horse ranch.   After completing his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Washington State University, he completed an equine sports medicine internship at Virginia Equine Imaging in Middleburg, VA. He received his training in diagnostic imaging from Colorado State University and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiologists.  Following his residency he completed fellowship in advanced imaging with training from Colorado State University and from Musculoskeletal Radiologists in Fort Collins, CO.  He was an Assistant Professor of equine diagnostic imaging at the University of Georgia for 4 years before returning to an equine diagnostic imaging position at Colorado State University in September of 2016.  His area of interest is the equine athlete and musculoskeletal diagnostic imaging.  Dr. Selberg is a certified member and lecturer at many of the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology continuing education events.  He is also an FEI treating veterinarian and active member in AAEP.  Aside from radiology, he also enjoys skiing, jiu jitsu, fishing, spending time with good friends and family, his lovely wife Katie, our little girl Beckett, our new addition a boy Calder, and a yellow dog.
